The Power of the Spoken Word - Bola Olu-Jordan
In warfare prayers, one of the greatest weapons to use against Satan and his workings is to verbally renounce all his assignments and ministrations on you, yours or any given situation. It is best done verbally because it is a warfare and war (fare) has to do with issuing commands and orders. It is interesting to note that in such warfare, it is neither Satan nor you doing the actual battle, but the ministering spirits (Angels or demons), who only respond to commands. Unfortunately, Christians make little use of theirs in warfare.
This is why many assume a militant approach when it comes to warfare prayers, praying out loud with much fervency, shout and power because the enemy is not gentle. It is not the militant approach that does the war but the commands that is issued. In every war(fare), commands are not what you wish to say, but what the ministering spirits (soldiers) understands so as to be able to act. They only act on instructions. Many warfare prayers seems unanswered because the angels do not understand your commands. In warfare, there is need to issue out clear commands and instructions so that those who wait on the command can act appropriately. “For if the trumpet give an uncertain sound, who shall prepare himself to the battle” 1 Cor 14:8. The art of issuing workable and understandable commands in battle is called warfare. You must be skilled in using your weapons of war, otherwise, you may use it to kill yourself or the enemy may even use it against you. It is one thing to know the command, it is another thing to know how to issue commands.
David had the smooth stones, but he also needed the skill of using the sling to be able to direct the stone to where he wanted. That skill is the spoken word, which is always the original seed. It is the highest form of communication both in the spiritual and in the physical and also one of the things that distinguishes us from animals. A person unskilled in the use of commands in warfare is like a dumb commander. His will soon be killed after his soldiers have been slaughtered.
During warfare prayers, learn to speak out into the air. Satan is the prince of the air (beelzebub), lord of the flies. His throne is in the atmospheric heavens, where he parades to and fro (Job 1). When you speak into the air, you release missiles to his kingdom with the power of the word. It will not return void. It is the highest weapon in warfare. John 6:63: “…the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life”. They cannot die. God said: “let there be light and there was light”. He spoke out, he did not assume or imagine. That is why the Bible says God has lifted His words above His name. Heaven and earth may pass away but the word of God will not pass without being fulfilled.
There is power in the spoken word. When you speak out loud, apart from the fact that it keeps you focused in prayer, it achieves much more result in the spirit realm than to just pray inside. Isa 55:11 says: “So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it”. Proverbs 6:2 says: “Thou art snared with the words of thy mouth, thou art taken with the words of thy mouth”. Remember Mark 11:23: “For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith”. Even in salvation, “For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation” Rom 10:10. Until you confess it with your mouth, you are still not saved.
The amount of the Word of God in your mouth determines the extent of your success in warfare. That is why Paul advised “let the word of Christ dwell in you RICHLY in all wisdom”. It took Jesus the word to defeat Satan in the wilderness, the spoken word! The written word will not profit you except when you confess it with your mouth: you thus give it life. Otherwise, it profits you nothing. Whether you put the Bible in your pillow or you hold it in your hand does not make it the word of God. It becomes the word of God only when you confess it. Satan knows the Bible (logos), perhaps even more than you, but the difference is when you change the word from logos (written word) to rhema, (revealed word) and send it to him, he becomes uncomfortable. Because “the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart” Heb 4:12. He cannot resist the power of the spoken word for it is the highest force on earth, but only when you activate it.
Start to release the power in your mouth into the air during warfare. It makes Satan quakes and trembles. He cannot resist the power of the spoken Rev 12:11 says: “And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony”. It took Jesus ‘it is written’ to overcome Satan in the wilderness, it will not take you less. Regardless of your spiritual level, Satan does not respect you if you do not have ‘it is written’. In all the three temptations, He spoke not the word of His mouth, despite He is God, but he said in the three times: it is written. You can only say it is written when you actually know it is written. It is one thing to know it is written and it is another thing to know what and where it is written. Repackage the written word to the spoken word and send it to him laden with the strength of faith. You are a victor!
