Name Your Beast - Bola Olu-Jordan
“And out of the ground the LORD God formed every beast of the field, and every fowl of the air; and brought them unto Adam to see what he would call them: and whatsoever Adam called every living creature, that was the name thereof. And Adam gave names to all cattle, and to the fowl of the air, and to every beast of the field; but for Adam there was not found an help meet for him” (Gen.2:19-20)
It is interesting to know that it is God that formed EVERY BEAST OF THE FIELD AND EVERY FOWL OF THE AIR. The Lord formed them and brought them unto Adam to see what names he would call them; ‘and whatsoever Adam called every living creature, that was the name thereof’.
God did not bring them to Adam to kill him or to scare him away: He brought them that he might take authority over them. Giving name to something is a mark of possession and ownership. Parents give name to their children and masters to their slaves.
Beasts of the field are the undesirable situations and circumstances; and fowls of the air are forces and powers of darkness around us. But God formed them and brought them to Adam to name and tame them. We are also to name and tame the beasts that would devour us, and the fowls of the air that will swallow us up. God bring them our ways sometimes, just to see what names we would call them .Unfortunately, instead of us naming and taming them, we run away from them. Some have allowed them to kill them.
God is watching and waiting to see what names we would call them. Whatever name we call them, that is the name they bear. Call the wolves, hyennas and tigers of your life ant, and so shall it be! David called Goliath a chicken, and so he became.
If we call them killers, they would kill us. If we call them servants, they will obey us. God bring them our ways to test us. They are not to kill us but to prune us. No father wants to have a child that is afraid of ordinary ants. A brave child is a pride of the parents. We can never become brave if we don’t have such encounter and challenges. ‘For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth’ Heb.12:6
See that word: ‘whom the father loveth, he chasteneth’. Which means God ‘chastens’ (disciplines and trains) His children so as to bring them into maturity. Becoming a warrior is not by honourary title. It is by (warfare) encounters and experiences. He also scourgeth every son whom he receiveth. To kill? No, but to make strong. That is the way of the victors.
Stop crying over your beastly situation and circumstances. Name them! It was because Adam called lion ‘lion’, that is why we call it lion today. If he had called lion snake, we would have been calling it so. It is the name you call your situation and circumstances that people will call them. That situation and circumstances will answer to any name you call it. If you call it a killer, a vampire, a devourer, etc, so will it be.
The disciples were busy bewailing their situation when they ran into troubled waters and the wind was contrary to them. They laboured much with little success. They toiled much until they were bereft of what to do. They called it wind. They called it storm. They saw it so and so it was to them. They lost out and were been carried about by the tempest. They had the very Word around them but they allowed the word to sleep. They knew Him, but did not engage Him. They would perish as long as they would not engage the word.
Suddenly, the realization of it must have dawned on them. They woke up the Word, Jesus. Jesus did not fidget but addressed the situation. He spoke to the situation. He changed the situation from storm to still. He called it peace and so it was. He asked the storm to behave and it did. He named it peace and it answered.
The word is near you. It is in your mouth. Speak it out. Call it what you want
Watch your tongue! Names tell on people and things. Nobody will dare name his child Judas, because they know names have a powerful effect.
Stop running away from those situations when they come, run after them. God is there with you, watching if you will disappoint him or make him a proud Father. Jesus said ‘verily I say unto you, if ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you’ (Mt. 17:20).
The Lord has given you power, authority and dominion over every beast of the field and over every fowl of the air. They are what you call them. The situation and circumstances and elemental forces of the powers of darkness should bow to you. Hear what Jesus said about them ‘And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven’ Mt.16:19.
Even Satan himself is like a roaring lion. He is never one. Jesus is the original lion of the tribe of Judah and you are His child. You cannot only roar, you can devour!
The beast will not devour you. The fowls will not swallow you. They are only there to intimidate you and cause fear into you. Once you are afraid, you are already a looser. God ‘hates’ the fearful to the extent that he said they shall find their place in the lake of fire that burns with sulphur and brimstone. Never you be afraid because the Lord has not given you the spirit of fear but of love, power and sound mind. Address your mountain, don’t dress them. Name them don’t bewail them.
Adam named the beasts and he was at peace with them. They never could harm him. Once you name the beast, they become a pet and a puppet. It is time to name and tame your beast! Do it NOW!
