IMPARTING THE WORLD FROM YOUR HOME - Funke Olu-Jordan
The family is the small unit of the nation. It can be equated to an atom, which is the smallest indivisible part of an element; the society being the element. Without the family unit, there is no nation or society. The family is an integral part of the nation that should be held with dignity.
The propagation of the Gospel of Christ begins from the family unit. God has entrusted to parents a sacred responsibility and a solemn charge in child training (Psalms127:3). Children are God’s heritage. Parents have a big role to play in their children’s life, i.e. (present and future) and also the expansion of the kingdom of God in generations to come. The scripture says, ‘train up your child in the way he should go and when he is old he will not depart from it’. (Pro. 22:6). The training of a child involves practical demonstration of our attitudes and some of these attributes as parents.
LOVING RELATIONSHIP: Parents must demonstrate a loving relationship for their children to see and observe as husband and wife. This affords a child to learn how couples are to relate in marriage. An atmosphere of love must be felt by the children at home; between husband and wife and also to them.
SPIRITUAL TRUTH: We must teach the children to grow up to acknowledge the power in God’s word: to respect the sacredness and reality of the word of God and see it as the Truth. Timothy was taught Faith by his mother, Eunice, the testimony which began from his grand mother, Lois (2Tim1:3-5).
CHRISTIAN LIFE: Parents are to teach children how to live a Christian life by their utterances and behaviour. Unfortunately, the pressure of survival has denied many mothers from taken up this primary role in their homes. The lives of many children are being shaped and influenced by unmonitored television programs, peer group, religious organizations, friends and other social activities
DISCIPLINE: Children will follow God’s way only through Loving and Consistent discipline by the parents (Pro.13:20). It must be explained clearly to a child why he or she is being punished or disciplined. This important duty must not be shifted to housemaids or nannies, all because of money and sometimes, quest for relevance in the society. We must remember the local adage that says “an untrained child will eventually sell-off the house built by his parents”. This implies that training our children is building a resting place or a house for our future, a habitation for the Lord.
PARENTAL PRESSURE: Mothers are ministers in the home. Our attitudes, behaviors and responses to situations go a long way in the formation of our children. Many adult children are over-burden with unreasonable demands from parents, these provoke the children to anger and might eventually push the child to loose hope of ever performing well enough to please them (Col.3:21, Eph 6:4).
DEDICATION: Children are seeds given by God for you to plant and nurture to maturity (fruiting stage). Our dedication to the cultivation determines their future fruitfulness. A seed planted and abandoned to fate may not likely bring good fruit, if it ever survives. The neglect of one’s child brings thorns in ones eyes. They are your planting; nurture them through Training, Loving, Discipline and Prayers. A farmer that plants but abandon, yet continually pray for rain and bountiful harvest will not blame God if he eventually harvests weeds instead of fruits.
PRAYERS: The training of our children cannot be effective on them without prayers. The heart of a child is the seat of all evil, which can only be removed through prayers and discipline. Jesus thought his disciples to pray and he also prayed for Peter so that Satan will not have him. Children must be taught how to develop independent pray life along with our consistent intersession for them. Constant, Deliberate and Consistent prayer brings desired result in our children’s life. Our prayers can only be effective when we train. A spiritual mother must balance her steadfast prayer life with having time to train her children the act of prayerlessness.
It is important we train in the right path, correct them when they are wrong and encourage them when we are impressed by their performance. Our hearts suppose to bleed whenever we make these gifts of God to fall or make mistakes on them.
Moses placed much emphasis on the need for parents to train children in order to partake of God’s blessings (Deut. 6:6-7). Fathers are to give command to these children and ensure that such are carried out, while mothers are expected to issue laws to them (Prov.6:20).
The training of our children is not for one party, couples must come together to do it and build up a good name for their family. Children are the determinant of whatever name we are called in the society. (Pro.22:1) Our children are our testimonial to the society and nation as a whole.
